Lasswade is a historic village in Midlothian in Scotland situated between Loanhead and Dalkeith, nine miles south-west of Edinburgh. Lasswade was well-known in the 18th and 19th centuries for its paper mills powered by the fast-flowing water of the River North Esk. Famous residents of Lasswade include Sir Walter Scott who spent six years at Lasswade College and artist William McTaggart (1889), whose work features the Moorfoot hills which stand to the south of the village. The village is surrounded by rolling hills, picturesque scenery and is a popular tourist destination ideally located for touring Edinburgh and the Borders. Historically interesting features include the 13th century Medieval Parish Church, Melville Castle and nearby the 15th century late gothic Rosslyn Chapel made famous by the Dan Brown novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’. Attractions include the Edinburgh and Lasswade Horse-Riding Centre, the Kevock Garden Plants and alpine plant nursery and the Butterfly and Insect World at Dobbies Garden Centre with free flying exotic butterflies in an indoor tropical rainforest, animal information and handling sessions, and a selection of reptiles, bugs, tarantulas and bee enclosure. There are 6 golf courses nearby to choose from and clay target shooting at Pathhead. Newtongrange has two leisure centres, swimming pool and is the home of the Scottish Mining Museum which has a visitor centre and virtual reality tours.
