Melrose is an ancient town in the central Scottish Borders region, situated on the south-side of the River Tweed lying at the foot of the Eildon Hills, 3 miles south-east of Galashiels and 37 miles south-east of Edinburgh. Melrose is famous as the place where the game of Rugby Sevens originally came from and since 1883 have hosed the annual Melrose Sevens competition. Settlers in the area date back to the Iron Age with a hill-fort on the top of the Eildons. The Romans arrived c79AD and built a large fort named Trimontium. The Trimontium Museum and Three Hills Roman Heritage Centre have exhibitions dedicated to Roman life in Scotland. Melrose is a popular tourist destination surrounded by beautiful scenery and steeped in history. The town has hotels, self-catering accommodation, B&B’s, a hostel and a caravan park, shops and places to eat. A major tourist attraction is the extensive ruins of Melrose Abbey founded by the Cistercians 1136. There are driving tours available to take in all the many Border Abbeys. Other attractions include Priorwood Garden with an organic orchard and flowers suitable for drying; there is a shop and picnic area and Harmony Gardens with 3 acre walled garden with fruit, vegetables and spring bulbs. Abbotsford, home of Sir Walter Scott, is 3 miles west on the banks of the Tweed.
