Monmouth - positioned strategically for keeping the rebellious Welsh in check is steeped in history, from its Roman origins through Medieval prosperity to Georgian splendour. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the heart of the Wye valley, Monmouth is full of quaint alleys , charming squares and unexpected treasures. The C13 stone Monnow bridge is structurally unique. Historians can visit the remains of Monmouth Castle - Henry V was born here, then see the tapestry displayed at The Shire Hall celebrating his victory at Agincourt. There is also an exhibition about Geoffrey of Monmouth whose work provided some source material for Shakespeare’s plays. Across the stone bridge you can turn left towards the Forest of Dean - Dennis Potter ( of Singing Detective fame ) was particularly fond of this area - or turn right to the Kymin and the Roundhouse for views across seven counties. Come back to Redbrook and brave the steel girder footbridge straddling the river. The reward - a meal at The Boat (eccentric, hospitable and beautiful - the outside tables nestle on wildflower covered banks) but perhaps go in summer – it is subject to floods - when you visit you’ll see “Wye.”
