The tiny and picturesque Staffordshire moorland village of Flash sits just off the A53 between Leek and Buxton, with Macclesfield off to the west via some decidedly minor roads. Though only a short drive from Buxton it feels like an isolated outpost, something that in the distant past led to it gaining a reputation for harbouring some dodgy deeds and people including counterfeiters and illegal prize-fighters. That isolation speaks of the beautiful hilly countryside surrounding it, and the climb to the place – acknowledged as the highest village in Britain at just over 1500 feet. Though the village proper only boasts about 40 houses, it also has a pub and a pretty church, the rather stocky St Paul’s, and a Methodist Chapel built in the early days of that movement. Just outside the settlement there is another pub and a small shop; and on the slopes roundabout there are innumerable stone farmhouses whose occupants raise the sheep dotting the view among the rocks and heather. As might be expected of a place in the Peak District National Park this is walking country, though some parts demand care. The terrain is enhanced with the various rivers in the lands around the village – the Dove, Dane, Manifold and Goyt; walkers will also spot the long-abandoned small-scale coal pits. Local beauty spots include the ancient packhorse bridge at Three Shires Head just northwest of Flash, where Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire meet; Axe Edge north of the village; and The Roaches a few miles south.
