Uttoxeter is an old market town set in the heart of the farmland of East Staffordshire. As an old market town this tradition is very much alive today with its regular farmers markets attracting growers and producers from up to 30 miles away and offering a diverse range of produce. Still visible today are the remains of the canal that was built around 1811 but fell into disrepair when it was superseded by the railway which in turn was subsequently closed. The canal did, and still does, boast an interesting feature at Crumpwood Weir where the canal crosses the River Churnet on top of a weir. The town of Uttoxeter dates back to Norman times and today, if you look, you will still find evidence of their architecture at the parish church boasting a 14th century tower and, slightly earlier, the Old Talbot in the market place dating back to the 13th century. Having said that the real reason for visiting Uttoxeter could be that you are looking forward to a day out at the races, Uttoxeter races are an excellent day out or it could be that you are visiting nearby Alton Towers, or simply visiting the town to enjoy the hospitality it offers.
