Although Chale is a quiet farming village, its history is bound up with the sea. Chale is located at the southern point of the island where the spectacular but treacherous coastline was once notorious for shipwrecks. Many vessels smashed into the rocks in and around Chale Bay, with great loss of life, and salvaged timber was then used in local building. The Wight Mouse - a 17th Century coaching inn with fine sea views (and excellent children's facilities) - was extended with timber taken from the wreck of the Clarendon in 1836. Over the centuries, attempts were made to improve safety for sailors, and two abandoned lighthouses, known locally as the Pepper Pot and Salt Shaker, are still standing on St Catherine's Down. The Down, which towers above Chale and looks out over the English Channel, is much loved by walkers for its breathtaking scenery and sights such as the 72-feet Hoy Monument, built in 1814. Chale's most popular visitor attraction is Blackgang Chine, a theme park set in the cliffside among 40 acres of beautifully planted Victorian gardens. The park mixes the thrills of rollercoasters and water rides with animated indoor shows and traditional amusements such as a hall of mirrors.
