The inland settlement of Rookley may look like the sleepy village that time forgot - the old schoolhouse has been converted into a private dwelling, and Rookley Brickyard, the island's last remaining brickworks, closed in 1974 - but visitors flock to the area for two reasons. One is the 20-acre Rookley Country Park, a caravan and chalet centre set in glorious surroundings with coarse fishing lakes, a putting green, swimming pools, bars, restaurants and activities and entertainment for all the family. Rookley's other great attraction is the Chequers Inn, a country pub that blends traditional charm with contemporary quality. A former smugglers' den - where the scoundrels reputedly hid illegal spirits under layers of fish - it's recommended by the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, and has been declared the National Family Pub Of The Year by the Good Pub Guide. Customers might work off a hearty lunch at the Lake Farm riding stables, located close by. From Rookley, there are stimulating walks to Chillerton and Godshill, a quaint, picture-postcard village whose twisting roads and thatched cottages are overlooked by a 15th Century hilltop church. Here, the intricately detailed Model Village is worth visiting, in the gardens of the Old Vicarage.
