Brechin is situated in the valley of Strathmore, 9 miles west of Melrose. Brechin is a town and former royal burgh in the Scottish region of Angus. Brechin was given royal burgh status in 1641. The parish contains the villages of Little Brechin and Trinity, the location of the 18-hole golf course and squash courts. Brechin has many structures of antiquarian interest including the 18th century Brechin Castle, the chapel of Maison Dieu Hospital 1267 and the medieval stone built Brechin Bridge. Standing on the river Esk in the town centre an archway from the high street opens to Bishops Close to the 13th century Brechin Cathedral, the cathedral has been altered but still incorporates medieval work. At the southwest corner of the cathedral, is an 11th century Round Tower standing 26m high, it would have originally been free-standing. Brechin has a busy town centre, with a range of shops, supermarkets, cafes, pubs and local amenities. Brechin Town House Museum in St. Ninians Square has displays about the burgh and the cathedral. The Brechin Castle Centre on the Haughmuir includes a garden centre, café and Country Park with ornamental lake, farm and children’s play area. The Pictavia exhibition centre displays artefacts and information about the ancient civilization of the Picts.
