The former royal burgh town of Forfar is situated on the north-east end of the Howe of Angus, located in Strathmore near to the Angus Glens off the main road between Perth and Aberdeen. Forfar was granted royal burgh status in 1124 by David I. The town’s major industries are tourism and agriculture. Famous for the Forfar Bridie, a tasty meat pastry and the Strathmore Springs, bottled mineral water. The ancient town of Forfar is home to a vast amount of historical interest, dating back to the Roman Invasions, a succession of Roman camps were established north of Forfar; the Romans were displaced in the middle ages by the Picts. The ruins of the square tower priory at Restenneth date back to the Pictish period. Forfar Athletic is the local Football team. There is a Country Park, an ice rink, a cricket, Rugby union and gliding club. Forfar Loch is used by a sailing club and the annual Highland Games are held on the Lochside. The Meffan Gallery and Museum is in the High Street amongst good shopping facilities. At Cunninghill there is a Leisure Centre with swimming pool and an 18-hole golf course. Glenshee, Glencova and Glenprosen are nearby popular skiing and hill walking resorts.
