Failsworth, renowned for its industrial heritage, is to be found in the County of Lancashire lying between Oldham and Manchester and is best known today for the hatting industry that originated here in the mid 15th century. At that time, and up until the Industrial Revolution the area around Failwsworth consisted of good farmland with a number of cottage industries, weaving and hat making together with farming. The onset of the Industrial Revolution saw the area grow with increased population and industries all utilising the new canal network that passed through Failsworth. The most famous landmark in Failsworth is the Failsworth Pole, was it a maypole on what once was the village green or was it merely a signpost as its location suggests. What is certain though is that the manufacture of hats that started as a cottage industry in the area is today still thriving as an industry. Failsworth today is well placed to serve Manchester and Oldham, its appeal to those that live there is simply that there is no place like Failsworth.
