Cannington is an attractive village which sits near to the River Parrett, in the county of Somerset, home to two thousand people. This ancient village at the foot of the Quantock Hills dates as far back as Saxon times and beyond, evidence of which may be seen at Cannington Hill which was the site of an Iron Age Hill Fort. Today's visitors can share in its past where a gentle stroll around the village uncovers houses and cottages from the 17th and 18th Centuries fashioned from brick and stone that was quarried locally. From its small beginnings of an agricultural community, the village grew and expanded over the centuries, it was once the location of a Benedictine Priory in the 12th Century, which existed right up until the dissolution of the monasteries, today visitors can see the tapestry of flowers and plants within the Medieval walled garden. There are shops, pubs and an attractive 17th Century Coaching Inn, for those visitors who wish to stay there is a vast choice from Georgian House, 14th Century Manor House and a converted Water Mill.. The village is dominated by the impressive tower of St Mary's church, and surrounded by rich countryside which once inspired Wordsworth, Byron, and Shelley to put pen to page.
