Situated within easy commuting distance of both Bath and Bristol, Holcombe is a small village in the North of Somerset. It is part of the Hundred of Kilmersdon and is six miles North East of Shepton Mallet. Its history is both interesting and slightly macabre, the original medieval village having been buried following the plague. The parish church survives from that period and is surrounded by mounds, which serve as a reminder of the events of the past. It is believed that the nursery rhyme 'Ring a Ring o' Roses' originated in Holcombe. The Holcombe Inn was known for a number of years as The Ring o' Roses, but recently went back to its original name. Holcombe was the site of many coal mines forming part of the Somerset coalfield, where coal was mined from the 15th century up until 1973. Holcombe Quarry is now closed and considered dangerous and yet remains a popular swimming haunt for the young in the area. The old church of St Andrew has Late Saxon-early Norman origins. It was rebuilt in the 16th century and Scott of the Antarctic is buried in a family grave there. As well as the Holcombe Inn, visitors can try the Duke of Cumberland.
