Shepton Beauchamp is a small village and civil parish situated in the county of Somerset. It can be found four miles north east of Ilminster in between the Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels. The word 'Shepton' has Saxon origins and means literally 'sheep settlement'. Beauchamp (pronounced 'Beecham') was added to honour the Beauchamp family who held the manor there from the mid 12th century. In 1361 the manor passed to the Seymour family. Sir John Seymour resided in Shepton Beauchamp when he was the High Sheriff of Somerset (1515-16). There is a chance that his young daughter Jane Seymour, famously the third Queen of Henry VIII, was there with him during this time. The church is dedicated to St. Michael and was constructed using the local Hamstone around the 13th century. It has since been extensively remodelled, and underwent a major renovation in 1865 under the guidance of George Edmund Street. The church has an impressive tower which features clocks with Roman numerals to the west and south faces and a higher polygonal stair-turret to the north corner. It is a grade I listed building. The former rectory was built in 1874 and is now called Beauchamp Manor.
