Winsford is an attractive village set within the borders of Exmoor National Park. The River Exe forms much of the boundary of the village, which is also situated on the Exmooor to Tiverton road. Locally there are stone quarries and an abundance of iron-ore, the mining of which once accounted for much of the prosperity of Winsford. Winsford Hill is the location of a number of Bronze Age burial sites, known as the Wambarrows. There is also a standing stone known as The Cartacus, believed to have been erected by early Pagan villagers. Among its places of interest is the church of Saint Mary Magdalene, which was restored in 1858. The church contains an example of a painted panel created in 1609 during the reign of King James I, considered to be one of the best examples from that period in the whole of Great Britain. In 1881 the village was the place of birth of the famous Labour politician Ernest Bevin. Visitors can stay at the Karslake House Hotel, a 15th century malthouse in which room five still has the original stone malt-drying floor. Alternatively, the thatched Royal Oak dates back to the 12th century and was an important stop for wool and yarn carriers travelling to Exeter.
