Wootton Courtenay lies entirely within the Exmoor National Park in the West Somerset district of Somerset. The main residential area lies below the hillside of Wootton Common. The parish of Wootton Courtenay contains the hamlets of Huntscott, Brockwell and Ford. The village is small, with a population of less than 300 at the last census. In the Domesday Book it was simply recorded as Otone, meaning settlement by the wood. Courtenay was added to the village name in the 13th century when the Courtenay family became owners of the manor there. The parish church at Wootton Courtney, dedicated to All Saints, was built between the 13th and 15th centuries and has been designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building. The church features an unusual gabled bell tower. The Exmoor National Park is a largely unspoilt English treasure made up of tranquil moorland, winding rivers and a breath taking coastline of secluded bays and spectacular cliffs. Exmoor is sprinkled with many quaint villages like Wootten Courtenay, as well as attractive towns and charming harbours. Over two million people now visit Exmoor each year to enjoy its unique landscape and cultural heritage, and to savour the peace and tranquillity of the area.
