Castel is the largest parish in Guernsey in terms of area. It is named Castel because its parish church, St Marie de Castel, was built on what had formerly been a Roman Fort. It is believed the Romans chose this location as it is central to the island. The 14th century church has two main notable features, a preserved medieval fresco and a menhir in the churchyard. The pre Christian Neolithic standing stone appears to be carved into the shape of a woman and is believed to be a female fertility symbol. The parish hosts the North Show and the Battle of Flowers in August each year. If you are looking for quality accommodation and possibly a spot of golf, La Grand Mare Hotel, Golf and Country Club offers the perfect solution together with a beach-side location. Alternatively you could try the Hotel Hougue du Pommier, a former 18th century Guernsey farmhouse, retaining much of its original charm. Pubs in the parish serving food include The Sports Bar at the Vazon Bay Hotel and The Rockmount at Cobo Bay, Castel. The central location makes Castel an ideal place to use as a base of operations when visiting Guernsey as a whole.
