Almost an island, the historic town of Shrewsbury is surrounded on three sides by a loop of the meandering river Severn. It is not hard to see why a town was established and grew on this site at a time when attack from neighbouring groups or foreign invaders was often threatening. The water forms a natural defence to the east, south and west, while on the neck of land at the north is the highest of the two hills within the loop. Probably in Saxon times people began to settle on the land within the river loop and the town of Shrewsbury or Scrobbesbyrig began to grow. The years after the Norman conquest saw the establishment of the Castle and Shrewsbury Abbey. Today the river loop still defines the town centre of Shrewsbury and within this natural limit, the main shopping and business area retains its ancient and intricate street pattern. A maze of narrow passages, called shuts, criss-cross the town between the main streets. Together with a large number of magnificent black and white houses of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, these create a very distinctive, fine-looking and atmospheric town. The attractiveness of Shrewsbury's historic streets and riverside setting is enhanced by a wealth of independent shops. The town centre is remarkably rich in interesting individual shops of a type which have been lost from many high streets - these range from traditional - a proper hat shop, a real ironmongers, a toyshop to contemporary - stylish interiors, fine delicatessens and designer boutiques. Events in Shrewsbury include a thriving contemporary visual arts scene all year round in the galleries which reaches its peak in July with the annual Visual Arts. This is closely followed by the Shrewsbury Flower Show - the longest established in the country and one of the biggest.
