The East Riding village of Sewerby sits between the pleasant seaside resort of Bridlington, and the dramatic coastline of Flamborough Head with its famous lighthouse and the highest cliffs on the East Coast. Sewerby looks out to Bridlington Bay, where in 1779 John Paul Jones brought the American War of Independence to Britain, attacking the navy just offshore here, watched by a fascinated and frightened crowd on the cliffs. While Bridlington and Flamborough offer plenty of attractions within a short drive or even a stroll from Sewerby, the village has its own great draw for visitors, namely Sewerby Hall. Built on the site of a Tudor hall, parts of which are still visible in the fabric, it was constructed between 1714 and 1720 by the Graeme family, the hall had bow wings and an elegant portico added a century later. The lovely orangery was added later still. Bridlington Corporation acquired the house in 1934, and it was opened to the public by local heroine Amy Johnson, the pioneer aviator, two years later. Johnson is commemorated with a special room in the Hall that contains memorabilia related to her exploits. Sewerby may be small, but it has its own church of St John the Evangelist, a mid-Victorian building in the Transition Norman style, and its own pub, fittingly for the setting called The Ship Inn. As this is a resort area, however, Sewerby has other facilities designed to make a stay more enjoyable – its own a la carte restaurant, and that most desirable of seaside adornments, a chippie.
