The small East Riding town of South Cave these days is largely a dormitory town for those working in nearby Hull, though the quick access to the M62 just a couple of miles along the A63 means that Leeds, Bradford Wakefield and Huddersfield are all within reasonable striking distance. At one time it was, however, a market town for the area, its charter granted by Edward I in 1291. The growing farmers’ market movement has seen the re-instigation of markets in the town, on the second Saturday of every month. With a population at the 2001 census of 4,515, the town has good amenities: a school, small supermarket, health service providers, two pubs including the charmingly named Fox and Coney, and a parish church, All Saints’. The local limestone church building is something of a mixture, as are most older English churches: the oldest elements date from the 13th century, the tower is 15th, and the north aisle built in the intervening century. Another local landmark is the Town Hall, a late 18th century structure that has also served as a school and market hall in its time. Located near the end of the M62 the town is easy for visitors to get to, and with the Humber Bridge offering a good route south, and Hull via its ferries providing a gateway to Europe, South Cave offers a good transit stop for travellers. The lovely minster town of Beverley is close by too, and only a short drive will take you to the Holderness peninsula, including the fascinating Spurn Head. Closer to the town itself is the pretty village of Hotham, well worth a visit
