St Helier
Did you know that Karl Marx holidayed frequently in St Helier from the 1850s to the 1880s? The revolutionary theorist had rather bourgeois tastes: he wrote to Engels in 1879: “We are giving up St. Aubin's [hotel] because Jessy and I have a horror of a monotonous daily lamb and mutton diet, as a result of which I have become a reluctant vegetarian over the past few days.” They moved to the Hotel de l’Europe. Workers of the world unite and demand the occasional beefsteak.
