A nephew of James and John Ballantyne, he joined the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1841, working as a clerk at the Red River Settlement in northern Canada, before returning to Edinburgh in 1848. His children’s adventure stories include The Young Fur Traders (1856), The Coral Island (1858) and The Dog Crusoe (1861).
