Born 1731 - Nice, France. Died 1810 - English natural philospher and chemist.


Educated at Cambridge but left without degree. Family wealth enabled him to carry out scientific research. Isolated carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Showed nitric acid to be a combination of atmospheric gases. Made theoretical study of electricity. Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge was named in his honour.
