(Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish, MBE)
Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnock in Glasgow and then raised in the docklands district of Govan in an area close to Ibrox, home of Glasgow Rangers. This accounts for his childhood love of Rangers.
Dalglish made his mark as a schoolboy international with Scotland. After trials with Liverpool and other clubs came to nothing he joined Celtic, the arch rivals of his boyhood favourites Rangers. When Jock Stein sent his assistant round to Kenny's house to sign him, Dalglish rushed to his bedroom to tear down his Rangers posters for fear they may offend him and sour the deal!
The young Dalglish was sent to play for Cumbernauld United, Celtic's nursery side, for whom he scored 38 goals in his first season. After a spell in an unusually talented Celtic reserve side, Dalglish made his debut in 1968 for Celtic's first team. It was not until 1971 that Dalglish made the first team on a regular basis. In the 1971-72 season he scored 23 goals in 49 appearances and was selected to play for the Scottish national team.
Dalglish scored 167 goals in 269 matches at Celtic before being sold to Liverpool as a replacement for Kop legend Kevin Keegan. Naturally, the Kop fans were sceptical at first, Keegan was a huge favourite with the Liverpool supporters prior to his move to S V Hamburg.
It did not take long for Kenny Dalglish to win favour, however, as he went on to score 31 goals in his first season for Liverpool. He also scored the winning goal in the European Cup Final of 1978. During the 1980s Dalglish was one of the most influential players in one of the most successful clubs in the world and in football history. He eventually became a player-manager at Liverpool, guiding them to the double in his first season in charge.
Dalglish subsequently went on to lead Blackburn Rovers, taking them back to the top flight and a League Championship. He followed this with guiding Newcastle United to a UEFA Cup title and Celtic to a Scottish League Cup victory. Dalglish has been linked to many clubs since leaving Celtic in 2000 but has yet to take up any offers.
