Tom Daley, born Thomas Robert Daley on 21st May 1994, is an English diver who specialises in the 10 metre platform event. He was born in Plymouth and began diving at the age of seven at the Plymouth Diving Club. He started on 1m and 3m springboard, then moved onto platform, winning his age group at all 3 events in the British Championships in 2004, 2005, and 2006. He was the youngest ever winner of the 2004 British Platform National Junior Group at the age of 10. In 2006 he was the Under-18 British Champion for Platform and Springboard and placed 2nd in the 10m Platform at the December 2006 Senior British Championships. He met the qualification standard for the 2006 Commonwealth Games but was not selected for the British team due to his age. He has qualified for the British team in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, beating British and international divers twice his age. He will be competing in the 10m platform and 10m platform synchro competitions. As an Olympian competitor he is ranked 19th in the world and is in unprecedented form for his age, the second youngest ever male British Olympian. He won the 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Young Personality Award, and is currently one of the young British Olympic hopefuls being followed by a BBC television series, 'Olympic Dreams' up to the 2012 London Olympics. His gold medals at the British Championships and the Europeans in Eindhoven, plus 2 synchro titles with partner Blake Aldridge, show he can perform under intense pressure. He is currently a student at Eggbuckland Community College in Plymouth and has to combine homework and study with international competitions. He admires Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and Sir Steve Redgrave and cites Canadian diver, Alexander Despatie, 1998 Commonwealth gold medal winner at age 13, as a role model. He has a lucky orange monkey mascot that sits on the poolside at his competitions.
