Tom Daley
Diver and Olympic medallist Tom Daley’s announcement that he is dating a man has thus far been met with either support or ‘so?’ That may just be a sign that as a society we are – with some sad exceptions – maturing. Having lived in the public gaze since he was in his early teens the still only 19-year-old chose a very public way to make his announcement – no press release slipped out while he was out of the country on a training camp, as could easily have been engineered, but a YouTube video where he speaks with confidence and clarity. He’s been through tough times, not least his father’s death in 2011. His private life now should not be such a challenge again but a joy, as from his announcement it appears currently to be. Good on him. And by the way, anyone wishing to push the false stereotype of homosexuals as unmanly should try copying one of his dives from the 10m board.
