Victoria Wood

Categorising Victoria Wood is difficult. She was a superb stand up comedian, though even in that sphere her style ranged across contemporary observational humour (with her own slant) and the music hall tradition. She was a brilliant playwright and scriptwriter for whose work a generation of women actors in particular can be thankful. She was a fine comic and serious actor herself. Yet diverse though her talents were, she seemed to restrict her output, determined that if she did write for or appear in something it would be special, and not just the source of another cheque. Victoria Wood was a very British (and though she had long lived in London, a very Lancashire) artist with a very British voice in both meanings of that word. She poked fun at our class differences, pretensions and insecurities, and modestly celebrated the peculiar qualities we possess, or at least those worth celebrating. Her gentle take on our lives will be sadly missed.
