David Frost

The death of David Frost marks the end of not one, but several eras in British – indeed world – television. It is hard to think that ‘the talent’ will ever play such a prominent role in major franchises as Frost did with LWT and TV-am; that satire can ever have such a profound effect on a society as TW3 did in the early Sixties; or that, saving Stephen Fry’s presence, we will ever again see a presenter able to combine wit, sharp intellect – he was a Cambridge graduate – a sense of fun and deep compassion rather than nice hair and fatuous celebrity. And it is not just his friends and fans who mourn him – no more will impressionists be able to conjure his image with that famous catchphrase: ‘Hello, good evening, and welcome.’
