David Bowie

In recent times few artists, and the late David Bowie certainly counted as an artist, can have had such an impact across so many elements of our culture. In music he was glam rock; pioneered creativity in music videos; moved white soul and dance music into new places; gave electronic music heart; and was never content to settle. As an actor of incredible presence Bowie similarly opted for diversity in his roles, from alien to Elephant Man, WWII prisoner of war to the boy-grown-older introducing the children’s classic The Snowman. He impacted hugely on fashion, our idea of male beauty, and attitudes to sexuality. Bowie’s career focussed on experiment, evolution and exploration. Those contemporary musicians whose lives are all about media appearances to establish a fixed and recognisable (and hopefully lucrative) persona would do well to learn from the Thin White Duke: he rarely even gave interviews, too busy doing something much more interesting and more often than not radically different from what he’d done before; and that creativity brought enormous success both artistic and commercial.
