Jason Kenny

It’s a long way from Jason Kenny’s native Bolton to Rio, though in the endless training that the cyclist has done since he first dedicated his life to the sport he has probably pedalled the equivalent distance many many times over. Kenny in his interviews comes across as rather shy and quiet, traits balanced by his somewhat bubblier fiancée Laura Trott, but the steel shows through very clearly too – it’s not hard to grasp why he has such an extraordinary competitive record. In Beijing Kenny won his first gold medal in the team sprint competition, but facing the great Chris Hoy in his pomp could only take silver in the individual event. Since then in the London Games and now in Rio his Olympic results have yielded nothing but gold, with two triumphs on home territory and three in Brazil. He is now well and truly out of the shadow cast by the taller and heavier Hoy, their Olympic medal tally currently identical – and it is perfectly possible that the Lancastrian will still be competing when Tokyo hosts the 2020 summer games, with the chance to go one – or more – better than the great Scot.
