Emile Heskey

Naming Emile Heskey as our hero of the week during a world cup is offering a hostage to fortune. To state the obvious, thus far in his England career he has never looked like becoming our all-time top scorer. But in a sport where that quality is rare he has continually shown dignity in the face of repeated attacks by football pundits. Humility too. Maybe like Martin Peters in 1966 he’ll prove 10 years ahead of his time, his game based on assists, holding the ball, and sometimes using his battle-tank frame to demolish defenders. And maybe too those pundits will eventually start to wonder why when Heskey had such an imperious match as target-man and distributor against USA his more celebrated colleagues failed to capitalise.
