Fabrice Muamba

There is of course nothing heroic and everything tragic about Fabrice Muamba’s metamorphosis from athlete to invalid, the gifted young footballer’s life suddenly threatened by his cardiac arrest on the White Hart Lane pitch. But the innate will that allowed him – thanks too to the attentions of medical personnel – to survive that lengthy crisis demonstrates heroic personal qualities. He will need the same strength of character once recovered to face a life that may not include playing football. Muamba demonstrated such resilience and indeed gifts in his early life, arriving here aged 11 with little or no English but leaving school with 10 GCSEs and three A-levels, gained while on Arsenal’s books. If he has to forsake his sporting career he will surely be a yet more admirable hero if he can build another life using those intellectual skills. Either way we wish him well.
