David Croft

The king of the catch phrase is dead, and that dynasty may have ended. David Croft, with Jimmy Perry and Jeremy Lloyd, wrote and produced some of our most celebrated sitcoms, among them the surreal ‘Allo ‘Allo, the semi-tragic Hi-de-Hi!, the saucy Are You Being Served, and the sublime Dad’s Army. His success can be judged not only in terms of ratings and money, but in its linguistic legacy: you stupid boy; are you sure that’s wise; I will say this only once; good moaning; and dozens of others. Croft understood our national nostalgia even for things not yet past, poked fun at lingering class divisions, and from a theatrical background recognized acting talent. An irreplaceable comedy hero.
