Danny Baker

Danny Baker’s announcement that he is being treated for cancer contained two of his hallmarks: wry irony, in this case of radio-therapy; and inquisitive eclecticism, his current viewing apparently Tommy Steele DVDs. Over the last three decades that same eclecticism has produced broadcasts where Wodehouse, The Beach Boys, The Clash, Dorothy Parker and Frank Sinatra rub cultural shoulders easily. But Baker’s genius has also been to mine the gold of audience recollection, anecdote and humour. In the British media it is rare for presenters to really talk with listeners, Baker’s forte, rather than at or in too many cases above them: his Five Live Saturday morning show like one of the best conversations you ever had with mates in the pub. We wish him well in his coming battle.
