Born in Cairo Egypt, he was educated in England before starting his acting career in Los Angeles. Returning to England he wrote screenplays for films including Gosford Park, Vanity Fair and The Tourist, and West End musical Mary Poppins. He is also creator of the critically acclaimed TV series Downton Abbey.
