Born 1780. Died 1872 - Scottish mathematician and astronomer.
Studied algebra and classics despite family disapproval. Had great success with publication of The Mechanism of the Heavens (1831). Wrote works on physics, physical geography and microscopic science. Supported education and emancipation of women. Somerville College, Oxford is named after her.
