River Fal, Cornwall
The River Fal flows through Cornwall, the county that occupies the far south western reaches of United Kingdom. The Fal springs to the surface on the Goss Moor between St. Columb and St Austell and flowsthrough Cornwall to reach the English Channel at Falmouth . Along much of its upper course the banks of the river are heavily wooded and an ideal habitat for fallow deer, peregrine and buzzards. Goss Moor itself a national nature reserve because of the international importance of the heathland and wetland environment there. The Fal separates the Roseland peninsula from the rest of Cornwall and, as with many rivers on the south coast of Cornwall and Devon , the Fal estuary is a classic ria or drowned river valley. The deep water of this type of estuary makes them excellent as harbours and ports. The Fal estuary is a classic example of a ria and is the third largest natural harbour in the world. The River Fal was the life-blood of the Cornish community between Truro and Falmouth for over 2,000 years. Nowadays, trade and fishing has largely given way to pleasure boating and tourism and Falmouth is known as the sailing and yachting capital of Cornwall.
