River Almond, Lanarkshire | Edinburgh and the Lothians

River Almond
The River Almond is a river that runs to the south of Edinburgh in an area of east-central Scotland, near to the border with England. The river rises in North Lanarkshire near Shotts before flowing though West Lothian on its way to the Firth of Forth at Cramond, near to the city of Edinburgh. Once choked by industrial pollution, the river is making a gradual recovery now that the heavy industry has disappeared. Wildlife is making a return to the river with brown trout, sea trout and Atlantic salmon reestablished in the river. Birds seen on the river’s banks include kingfishers, grey herons and dippers.
