Have just reserved for my 30th wedding anniversary and am delighted to be reassured that I will not be staying in a public convenience as per the expectations of other reviewers further down the page. I was also relieved to learn that I run absolutely no risk of encountering them during my stay, which is now certain to be tranquil. I congratulate the owners on their courage in exercising their absolute right to refuse service to those who would go to the length of posting such a lengthy negative review on the Internet just to get even. Such people discredit themselves and the website that serves as their mouthpiece, whether disclaimers are issued or not. I can assure others that no similar such incident has ever been witnessed by me on any of my regular visits to the Hotel, which I find to be among the best-run small businesses in the area.

Anyone looking for a warm, hospitable welcome and comfortable stay will find it at the Achilty Hotel. We have enjoyed many visits to this delightfully, characterful establishment, and have always received prompt, cheerful service from the Slater family, while being offered an excellant range of freshly prepared local fayre. The cuisine was of a very high standard; seasonal fresh fish from the West Coast and local Scottish fayre being Chris Slater's speciality. We found the Hotel ideally situated while travelling in the Highlands, and it made a perfect base from which to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside. We highly recommend the Achilty and look forward to our next visit.

Disappointing stay. The proprietors seem well meaning but they presented us with wrong bar and food bills, mixed up breakfast orders and chased us into the car park to insist we pay £6 which they claimed they had mistakenly keyed wrong on their cash machine. The manager wandered around cheerily attempting to engage in light banter with the guests which were occasionally inappropriate.

On passing through en route to the Highlands my sister, brother in law and I stopped at the Achilty Hotel for a quick drink and loo stop. In the bar my sister decided she wasn't thirsty so only my brother in law and I ordered a drink. On finishing the drinks my sister and I enquired where the toilets were. Only to have the proprietor point her finger at my sister and tell her that as she hadn't had a drink she was not allowed to use the facilities! My brother in law told them that he felt this was poor service and that she should be allowed to use the toilets. At which point we were all asked to leave and told never to return! So not wishing to spend any longer in the place we left. But as we were getting in to the car outside the proprietor appeared at the kitchen door with the chef, both of them shouting obscenities at us, telling us we were "cheeky f**king a**holes" and telling us never to return. The above experience makes my blood boil and makes me burst out laughing in equal measure. Clearly the owners and staff of the Achilty Hotel ought to be ashamed. They are providing the poorest advocacy for Scottish hospitalty - the majority of which is exceptional - and I don't believe there is ever an excuse for swearing at your guests, no matter how frustrating it must be to be used as a roadside loo-stop. On the other hand the experience was so bewildering and comical it made us laugh all the way to our destination and provided humourous dinner party conversation all weekend. On the whole though I would have to say the Achilty Hotel does not deserve to be a successful business with an attitude like that. And despite the laughs I would never ever knowingly go back and accept service that bad. So my advice is don't go. Ever.

"OUR FERVENT AIM IS TO MAKE YOUR STAY AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE" IS THE HEADLINE ON THEIR WEBSITE. I WOULD ADVISE THE OWNERS OF THIS HOTEL TO REMIND THEMSELVES OF THAT. I BOOKED THIS HOTEL FOR AND OVERNIGHT STAY FOR MYSELF AND 5 OTHER PEOPLE (WE WERE DOING A 24HR MTB RACE IN THE ADJACENTR FOREST). 1 OF THE PARTY COULDN'T MAKE IT, EVEN THOUGH I PHONED AND CANCELLED I STILL HAD TO PAY THE £25 DEPOSIT AND WAS ACTUALLY CHARGED THE FULL RATE FOR THE ROOM (£30) THEY ARE VERY SECURITY CONCIOUS AT THIS HOTEL AND DEMAND THAT THE FRONT FOOR BE LOCKED WHEN YOU LEVE AND ENTER THE HOTEL. I MYSELF FACED THE WRATH OF THE FEMALE OWNER WHEN I FORGOT TO LOCK THE DOOR. I HAD EXITED THE FRONT DOOR AND WENT TO THE VAN TO GET MY BAG, WHEN ENTERING THE HOTEL AND LOCKING THE DOOR I REALISED I HAD FORGOT SOMETHING FROM THE VAN, SO I WENT BACK TO THE VAN BUT FORGOT TO LOCK THE DOOR (THE VAN WAS 50 METRES AWAY IN THE CAR PARK) WHEN I RETURNED THE DOOR WAS LOCKED. IT WAS AT THIS POINT WHEN SPEAKING TO ONE OF OUR PARTY THAT SHE DEMANDED AN APOLOGY, MY FRIEND SHE WAS SPEAKING TO APOLOGISED BUT SHE WANTED AN APOLOGY FROM THE PERSON WHOSE WHO FORGOT TO LOCK THE DOOR. WHICH I DID DO. NEXT MORNING AT BREAKFAST ONE OF OUR PARTY ORDERED BREAKFAST BUT A FRIED EGG WAS BROUGHT INSTEAD OF SCRAMBLED EGG, WHEN THIS WAS POINTED OUT, THE PLATE WAS REMOVED AND BROUGHT BACK 30 SECONDS LATER WITH THE FRIED EGG AND TO BE TOLD "YOU DID ORDER BREAKFAST WITH A FRIED EGG" AND THE PLATE WAS PROMPTLY DROPPED IN FRONT OF HIM. WE WERE ALSO USING THE HOTEL CAR PARK AS OUR BASE FOR THE DURATION OF THE RACE (THIS WAS PREARRANGED WITH THE RACE ORGANISERS) BUT TO ALLOW THIS WE HAD TO PAY FOR IT!! (THE RACE ORGANISERS WERE INFORMED OF THIS AND DID NOT SEEM TO HAPPY). IN MY OPINION THE COUPLE RUNNING THIS HOTEL WERE WAY OFF IN THE HOSPITALITY STAKES. THEY SEEMED TO FORGET THAT EVERYONE OF US COULD BE REPEAT BUSINESS AT SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE...BUT NOT NOW. AT NIGHT IN THE BAR WE WERE OFFERED A PIECE OF FREE TABLET, WHICH WAS LOVELY.

Made very welcome and very hospitable. Very good evening meal and breakfast.,"The owners were friendly and helpful. The information about places to go to on the west coast when we left the Achilty hotel was great: we loved the Bealach to Applecross, thanks (lots of snow and hairy moments)."
