Cricket is believed to have arrived in Leicestershire in the early 18th century, with the first known reference to cricket in the county being from 1744 when a match was played at Barrow-on-Soar. Leicestershire County Cricket Club itself was not established until 1879 and did not join the County Championship until 1895 when they joined along with Essex. Leicestershire had met Essex in 1894 to play in what was the initial first class match played by either team. Leicestershire had to wait some time before the team began to achieve success in the County Championship, with 1953 being the first real taste of glory when the team achieved a third place finish. Towards the end of the 1950s and throughout the 1960s, Leicestershire became a stronger team and one capable of challenging for the title. Much of this success was down to the work of Captain Tony Lock and his successor Ray Illingworth. Lock took the team to a second place finish, and in 1975 Illingworth went one better to take the side on to win the title for the first time in its history. This was followed up in the 1990s when the team went on to win a further two County Championships.
