Donaghadee, a small seaside town on the east coast of the Ards Peninsula, has many big attractions. Chief among them is one of the most famous lighthouses in the country, looking out over a harbour with two piers. Donaghadee has a long sea-faring tradition, due to its proximity to Scotland. Today, the harbour is used primarily by fishing craft, the local lifeboat, and pleasure boats. From here, there are visitor cruises around Belfast Lough and sailings to the wildlife haven of the Copeland Islands. Another prominent feature of the promenade, rising behind the houses and shopfronts, is The Moat, a hill topped by a turreted fort dating back to the early 1800s. Donaghadee offers a range of sports, from golf to tennis and bowling, and it's an ideal base for exhilarating coastal walks. Shoppers will be fascinated by a variety of crafts and antiques shops, and art galleries, and there is some exceptional eating and drinking. Grace Neills, which opened its doors as the King's Arms in 1611, is officially recorded as the oldest pub in Ireland, while the much more contemporary Pier 36, on the quayside, has won many national awards as both a pub and a seafood restaurant.
