Ormskirk is a market town located in the North West of England in the county of Lancashire. The name Ormskirk is thought to be Scandinavian in origin, the Vikings landed on the coast in the 9th century and came inland and founded a church – the placename is therefore thought to be derived from the leader of the Vikings – Orm and the Scandanavian word for church “kirk” – hence Ormskirk. A mainly agricultural area with high quality land it is no wonder that in Tudor times many of the nobility had property in the area, Lord Stanley a descendant of one of the sovereigns of the Isle of Man lived at the Mansion House in St Helens Road and the Lathoms who owned the original Lathom Hall. Ormskirk was ideally placed to take advantage of the burgeoning coaching traffic that predominated travel in the mid 19th century prior to the coming of the railways. It is said that during this period around 30 coaches a day left Ormskirk either going North to Preston and Lancaster or South to Cheshire and London. When the railway line opened in 1849 the coaching traffic declined. Today Ormskirk successfully retains the feel of a market town, regular markets are still held every Thursday and Saturday and a new retail park opened. Ormskirk is the civic heart of West Lancashire and mention must be made of its splendid Parish Church which is only one of only three in England with a tower and a spire, the church being 12th Century whilst the spire is 15th century.
