The old mill town of Ramsbottom is a brilliant place for a real shopping trip. And to start on the right foot, the name means valley of the wild garlic, not sheep’s bum. The council has managed to keep the place full of character, with very few of the shops making up identikit high streets countrywide. There is a medium sized supermarket, but it is hidden away. Parking is generally free – there is a big car park down by the station for example. There are lots of quirky shops, old fashioned places and country pursuits suppliers, an antiques emporium where there are some gems hidden among the oddities and monstrosities, and some smart clothes stores and galleries. It’s also a foodie destination. Firstly because it has Ramsons, one of the best restaurants in the Northwest. Second it has a proper (if small) market on a Saturday. Third it has two real butchers, the one on Bolton Road complete with stable door and staff who speak their mind. If it helps get the shopping done, there is the bribery for the kids of a ride on the East Lancs Railway, with trains to Bury one way and Rawtenstall the other (the route to Rawtenstall is prettier). Easily reached off the M66 Ramsbottom is a great alternative to the cloned malls littering the country.
