Arnold is a suburb of Nottingham, situated just to the north east of the city boundary. Once just a village, Arnold today forms part of Greater Nottingham and has a population of over 35,000. It has its own vibrant town centre with a variety of shops and restaurants, including large supermarkets set alongside smaller independent businesses. Arnold appears in the Domesday Book as Ernehale and there are indications that the village may have existed in 500 AD but there's little evidence to support this. In 1066 the population was only about 150. The growth of the village into a town was, like many villages in the area, largely due to the invention locally of the Stocking Frame machine. This was the first automated knitting machine to become the mainstay of industry in the locality during the 19th century. There is a small museum at nearby Calverton dedicated largely to the invention. The population of Arnold was under 3,000 in the early part of the 19th century and had grown to nearly 9,000 by the end of the century. It was stated in the middle part of the century that there were almost 1,400 Stocking Frame machines in Arnold alone!
