Regarded by many as the jewel in Northumberland’s crown, Corbridge is located eighteen miles west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne just off the A69. Five miles north of the village is the site of the original Roman camp from which it grew, called Corstopitum, which marked the most northerly town in the Roman Empire. A supply town for the troops building and guarding Hadrian’s Wall, itt provided building stones for the construction of many of the local buildings including the church, vicar’s pele and nearby castles. The medieval street plan remains much the same but the Saxon church has trebled in size with the addition of aisles and naive. The village was burned to the ground several times in the fierce border wars with Scotland and as second only to Newcastle in wealth, its citizens heavily taxed by Edward I to pay for them. The bridge at Corbridge is the oldest of the medieval bridges but became derelict and was replaced in 1674. The substantial remains of the excavated Roman settlement include some of the best examples in the country of military granaries. The museum also houses finds from the site, including the famous stone fountainhead, the Lion of Corbridge, and give an insight into Roman life. Today Corbridge is a popular base for those exploring Hadrian’s Wall, the Roman site and the local Northumberland countryside.
