Highgate is a charming - and expensive - suburb in north London, loved for its village feel, its delightful Georgian cottages and terraces, and its scenery. Situated at the north-east corner of Hampstead Heath on a steep hill, Highgate has acres of countryside for nature-lovers to explore, and some especially interesting historic buildings. The ancient Highgate Wood is home to all kinds of wildlife, and as well as beautiful forest trails, it provides a clearing with a café, and football and cricket pitches. Waterlow Park, on Highgate Hill, commands spectacular views over London. The park's great attraction is Lauderdale House, a 1582 manor house set in lovely terraced gardens, which now acts as an arts and education centre. Highgate School, with its distinctive red-brick Victorian architecture, dates back to 1565. TS Eliot was a master here, and past pupils include poets Gerard Manley Hopkins and John Betjemen. The jewel in Highgate's crown, however, is its fascinating cemetery, where a bust of Karl Marx famously marks his final resting place. Highgate Cemetery also enjoys listed status as a natural woodland park. Other places to visit in Highgate include its atmospheric old pubs and some rather more contemporary coffee houses and restaurants.
