Southwark is London's most historic borough, comprising five districts. The borough's most popular attractions are located in the district of Bankside and Borough, bordering the south bank of the Thames between Blackfriars Bridge and London Bridge. This area was itself known as Southwark until the 1550s. The landmark Tate Modern building, linking to St Paul's Cathedral via the Millennium footbridge, was converted from an old power station to showcase the world's finest contemporary art. Its neighbour, the Bankside Gallery, exhibits watercolours and original prints. Another wonderful building is a recreation of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, which hosts plays, an exhibition and guided tours of both the Globe and the nearby Rose Theatre, an Elizabethan venue also associated with Shakespeare. Its remains, uncovered in 1989, have been rehabilitated for performances. Southwark Cathedral, London's oldest Gothic structure, is a prominent attraction, as is the more contemporary Borough Market, the UK's "principal centre of food excellence". Southwark has great restaurants and bars aplenty, and any number of galleries and unusual museums. These include the Kircaldy Testing Museum, the London Fire Brigade Museum, the Clink Prison Museum, which exhibits torture devices, and the Golden Hinde Educational Museum, a replica of Sir Francis Drake's Tudor galleon.
