Teddington, located between Twickenham and Hampton Wick, has historic importance in the life of the Thames. Teddington Lock - the river's largest lock - is sited in a conservation area, where the tidal and non-tidal sections of the Thames come together. Recent enhancements to the towpaths and footbridge have created a "gateway" for pedestrians to enjoy the riverside. Boating and sub-aqua clubs are part of a varied sporting life in Teddington, which is close to three golf courses and is also, reputedly, the birthplace of modern hockey. Cricket and rugby are widely enjoyed, the NPL Sports Club offers tennis, bowls and other activities, and the Teddington Pools & Fitness Centre is a popular indoor venue. Bushy Park, with deer roaming round its 1,100 acres, provides a wonderful combination of formality and wild countryside. A former agricultural village known for its orchards, Teddington is today largely residential, with a mixture of Victorian and Edwardian streets. It is, however, famous for Teddington Studios, which specialise in light entertainment for TV. Visitors will be charmed by a range of fascinating shops (including The Teddington Cheese) and the Landmark Arts Centre, housed in a striking converted church. The magnificent Hampton Court Palace is nearby.
