Tenterden is known as "The Jewel Of The Weald", and with good reason. Here is a place that has absorbed all of the facilities and high-street shopping brands demanded by the modern consumer without anywhere compromising the fine old character of the town. To walk along the celebrated high street is like stepping back in time. It's wide, light, bright and lined with broad bands of grass and trees separating pedestrians from the roadway, while the shops, restaurants and pubs are housed in historic buildings, many with their original facades and Wealden weatherboarding. This street and the local green together contain 180 listed buildings. Tenterden - once home to Lord Caxton and Lord Nelson's daughter Horatia - is located on a hill topped by the magnificent landmark of St Mildred's Church. Tenterden was formerly at the centre of the wool trade and later the broadcloth manufacturing industry. Today, it has something for everyone, from a golf course, a leisure centre and trout-fishing lakes to vineyards (Chapel Down Winery being the biggest producer of wines in England), a local history museum and an old-fashioned steam-train rail service that wends its way from Tenterden through acres of beautiful countryside to Bodiam.
