This charming village in Hertfordshire lies a few miles north of the large town of Welwyn Garden City. Welwyn retains village values and is a popular place in which to live for the affluent, being only 22 miles north of London and with excellent access to major roads. However, a population of under 3,500, countryside and historical interests being a short walk away provides a stark contrast. Welwyn village is in the valley of the River Mimram. It is the site of both Iron Age and Roman settlements in which many artefacts have been found and the Roman bathhouse can still be visited (junction 6 off the A1M). St Mary’s church dates back to Norman times in 1190, however it was added to in the 13th century – a fascinating blend of architecture. An important geographical location in history became of diminished value when in the 20th century the village was by-passed by the Great Northern Railway, this was due to the objections of local residents and landowners. It was then that the village’s potential was limited. The village has a good selection of pubs, restaurants and local shops. A ford is next to the high street (the Great North Road) and there are always ducks to feed! Welwyn village is an attractive and enchanting place to go.
