Welwyn Garden City enjoys a world-wide reputation as one of the finest examples of modern town planning. It was built soon after the first world war by Sir Ebenezer Howard (1850 to 1928) founder of the garden city movement. The first houses were occupied in 1920. Howard's concept was to create 'satellite' towns to help ease poor and overcrowded living conditions in London. His plan was to establish Welwyn Garden City as a town with its own public services, shopping amenities, good housing and places of employment. People moving here would enjoy working and living within easy reach of the countryside and have their own garden and open space. The design for the town was by architect Louis de Soissons.

The town has developed into a thriving business centre which is the base for a number of leading companies specialising in health care, high technology, food processing and electronics.
There are excellent leisure facilities including the 126 acre Stanborough Park containing boating and sailing lakes and open-air swimming pool. The Gosling Sports Park is a superb venue for cycling, athletics, squash, tennis and bowls. It also has a ski slope and golf driving range. There is an 18 hole municipal golf course at Panshanger and the Campus West entertainment centre near the town centre has a theatre, roller skating rink and library.
As the town enters the 21st century Welwyn Hatfield Council remains committed to preserving the garden city ideal. New buildings have to conform to the original design concept of the town centre and council planners try to produce a fine balance between conservation and development. Population 55,000
